Dawoud at Synesthesia

Synesthesia proudly presents Dawoud the Renegade Sufi in a special solo concert.

Dawoud will perform improvisations on new compositions (some of which are being premiered this night), selections from the Harmolodic Raga Cycle, a brief tribute in honor of Jimi Hendrix' 76th birthday, and whatever else he can get away with.

+++++++++++++++

Dawoud the Renegade Sufi is a musician (multi-instrumentalist / composer / improviser / producer) whose genre defying music is inspired by the vast musical traditions from around the world; east and west, acoustic and electronic, modern and ancient. Dawoud uses these varied genres to provide a creative and sacred inspiration, and illuminate a new musical path.

In addition to being an accomplished guitarist and bassist, it is his work on the sitar and dilruba that have earned his reputation as “The Jimi Hendrix of the sitar.” His experiments with applying jazz technique and electronics to the traditional music and techniques are unprecedented, and seeks to extend the boundaries of the instruments.

Dawoud also conducts Music Meditation Sessions: a guided group meditation which replaces suggested imagery with psychoactive musical form and sound.

He has performed in the US and Europe, appeared on many recordings, has composed for film, theater, and dance performances, and has enjoyed radio airplay in the US, Europe, Russia, and Indonesia. Dawoud has performed, either as a band leader, solo, or with others at virtually every venue of note in NYC (Including the Apollo Theater, Town Hall, the Blue Note, Birdland, and the Brooklyn Acadamy of Music). Some of the people he has performed and recorded (and jammed) with include Mark Deutsch, Ornette Coleman, James Blood Ulmer, Lauryn Hill, Nona Hendryx, Marie Alphonso (Zap Mama), DJ Celt Islam, SoSaLa, Gypsy Groovez Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Raga Massive Orchestra.
